The Armoury Chamber

It’s much more interesting to study history through artifacts than through books. The Armoury Chamber is the main treasury of the Moscow Kremlin. Since the 16th century, it has been the repository of state jewels and the treasury, as well as weapons and armor of Moscow princes.

The treasury has constantly been replenished with ambassadorial and patriarchal gifts, the property of disgraced boyars and the spoils of war. The royal workshops served as another source too. The best armorers, gunsmiths, jewelers, and icon painters of the ancient Russian state worked there. In 1806, the Armoury Chamber became a museum, but it was opened to the general public only after the Russian Revolution of 1917.

Immerse yourself in this unique collection for the whole day. There is a lot to see: armor and weapons, gold and silver handicrafts and works of art, works of Kremlin craftsmen (including the legendary Monomakh's Cap), a collection of carriages, fabrics, and paintings.

But that's not all! The permanent exhibition of the Diamond Fund is located on the first floor. It displays masterpieces of jewelry art that adorned the empresses, as well as gold nuggets and precious stones.

The State Museum of Oriental Art

This museum is a cultural and educational center with a rich history and extensive collections. It houses approximately 150,000 works of art, with only 5,000 of them being on permanent display, so it’s important not to miss current exhibitions.

As soon as you enter this museum, you are going to have a journey through space and time. In particular, you are going to sequentially familiarize yourself with the cultures of different countries, including Iran, China, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, and Tibet. Additionally, you can examine paintings by Caucasian artists, as well as handicrafts of the peoples of the Far North.

The main building of the State Museum of Oriental Art is a classical museum with display cases, which lacks any modern technologies. Perhaps that is why a special atmosphere of peace and tranquility has been preserved there. Attend tea ceremonies and learn about the way tea culture has developed over time. The lectures/concerts are a quite interesting format, too. You can study ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangements, and thus acquire an unusual, yet awesome skill!

The Bulgakov Museum

The Russian and Soviet writer Mikhail Bulgakov, who penned most of his works in the first half of the 20th century, is known abroad, first and foremost, as the author of the sensational novel The Master and Margarita. Of the museum’s three official locations, the main one is the communal apartment where the writer once lived; it served as the prototype for the "haunted flat" described in the novel.

Even if you’re not particularly interested in exploring Bulgakov’s personal belongings, documents, and photographs, this place is still worth a visit. It feels like stepping into a time machine, transporting you back to the pre-revolutionary era with its vintage furniture, and into a typical 1920s Soviet kitchen.

Tours often go beyond the walls of the communal apartment and are combined with a walk to Bulgakov's haunts or watching old films at Illyuzion, a nearby movie theater. The museum has two more sites: Bulgakov's memorial apartment (temporarily closed) and the Research and Educational Center with cozy, bright rooms for exhibitions, a lecture hall, and a grand piano for musical performances.

The Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center

It is the largest interactive museum in the country. Its spacious, functional and modern interior makes you want to come back again and again. The 12 halls of the main exhibition introduce visitors to the key milestones in the history of the Jewish people: from the creation of the world and the emergence of diasporas (you will see and feel this as you’re immersed in a 4D film) to the Holocaust and the present day. In addition, you can familiarize yourself with Jewish cuisine. By selecting a traditional dish favored by a sub-ethnic group on the screen, you will be greeted by a virtual cook who will teach you how to prepare it.

The museum has a large selection of current exhibitions dedicated to outstanding Jewish cultural figures and artists, books, and photography. Amazing educational programs for both adults and children are offered on a regular basis.

Be sure to visit the gift shop. It offers an enormous selection of books, including rare editions, as well as high-quality merchandise and handmade jewelry. Check out the museum building itself, too, since it is an example of the classical constructivism of the 1920s.

The Zoological Museum of the Moscow State University

Discover the marvelous world of zoology! All animal groups are represented among the numerous exhibits of this museum: birds and mammals are in the upper hall, while all the rest are in the lower hall. There is even a complete skeleton of a mammoth lurking by the stairs to the second floor. Also, in the comparative anatomy hall, you can see educational exhibits made by the Moscow State University employees a hundred years ago.

If you remember at least a little bit of the biology you studied at school, you would better opt for a thematic tour instead of a general one. For instance, you can choose a tour devoted to the birds or animals inhabiting a particular continent. The Zoological Museum also holds interactive classes for children, as well as group and one-on-one lectures. You can visit the terrarium with live reptiles if you make prior arrangements with the staff. A visit to such an interesting place can last for several hours, so make sure to bring a snack and water for your children as there is no cafe at the museum.
