The Maly Theatre
One of the oldest theaters in Russia, it has played a remarkable role in the development of Russian culture. Throughout the years, the theater, informally known as the House of Ostrovsky, has seen all 48 plays written by the great dramatist performed on its stage.
Each season, the Maly Theatre puts on 4-5 new productions, so even if you have already been to several of its premieres, it will still manage to surprise you with something new.

Theater on Malaya Bronnaya
A famous destination in Moscow’s historic center, the Theater on Malaya Bronnaya puts on famous interpretations of modern works as well as surprisingly innovative versions of classic plays. Sometimes, the performances are so beautiful, mesmerizing and emotional that they’re best compared to adult fairy tales.

The Moscow Academic Theatre of Satire
Numerous plays put on by this theater have become true gems of Russian culture. The famous production of The Government Inspector, based on the great comedy penned by Nikolai Gogol, is a must-see!
The building itself, at the cusp of two styles–neoclassicism and modernism–has its own history. Supposedly, the music hall of the building that now houses the Moscow Academic Theatre of Satire served as the prototype for the Variety Theater, where the grand black magic show took place in Mikhail Bulgakov's most famous novel, The Master and Margarita. The Russian Academic Youth Theatre
The Russian Academic Youth Theatre has been a fixture in Moscow for over a century. It is a great place to gain exposure to Russian culture and theater, as well as find out about its rich traditions and history. In Russia, the building that houses the theater proudly bears the status of a federal cultural heritage site–this is yet another reason to check it out! The Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre
The theater is in a mid-18th-century mansion, so even if you don’t have time to attend a performance, make sure to take a look at the architecture and interior, at the very least. Since June 2010, the Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre has been headed by Honored Artist of Russia Evgeny Pisarev. Gorky Art Theatre
Don't miss the chance to visit one of Europe’s most significant theaters! Its repertoire includes some of the best works of classical Russian and foreign drama performed by great masters of the stage. An evergreen hit is Master and Margarita, a theater adaptation of one of the world’s greatest novels.
Don’t forget to take in the architecture of the theater. Architect Vladimir Kubasov has managed to create a postmodernist masterpiece filled with idiosyncratic personal details. The theater can be seen from a long way off, and is undoubtedly one of the most striking buildings on the famous Tverskoy Boulevard.

The State Theatre of Nations
Come on down to one of the best theaters to exist in the capital’s recent history! It is famous for its modern productions that reinterpret classical works while experimenting with the audience’s perception and addressing pressing societal issues. The theater also hosts various festivals, promotes young talents, and puts on its own performances.
Since 2007, the renowned Russian actor Yevgeny Mironov has been the artistic director at the State Theatre of Nations.

Yermolova Drama Theater
The first building to get electrical lighting is now home to one of Moscow's oldest theaters. Admire the beautifully preserved 19th century mansion, which embodies a mixture of neoclassicism and eclecticism. If you find yourself nearby in the evening, don't miss the chance to admire the spectacular way in which it is lit!
The theater’s repertoire includes both world-famous hits and experimental productions. The cast is one of the best in the country. The theater's artistic director, the great Oleg Menshikov, sometimes appears on stage. Usually performances are accompanied by live music, and sometimes - for example, during performances of “Dream Orchestra. Copper” - the musicians are even among the audience.
Come early to have enough time to look at the paintings and photo gallery in the foyer before a performance. But don't get too carried away: you will need to take your seat by the time the third bell sounds!

Mossovet Theatre
One of the oldest theaters in Moscow, Mossovet was founded more than a century ago and has since hosted leading directors from all over the world. They include Andrei Konchalovsky, who has worked with Hollywood stars from Sylvester Stallone and Jon Voight, to Kurt Russell and Eric Roberts.

A famous theater in one of the most fashionable and lively districts of the city, Sovremennik's drama offerings will satisfy even the most demanding audience. They put on both timeless classics and innovative productions of works by trendy playwrights. Sovremennik has received numerous prestigious awards, including two State Prizes of the USSR, the Order of Honor and the famous New York Drama Desk Award.
Even if you don’t go inside, you will notice Sovremennik when you walk past. It’s a majestic building that brilliantly combines elements of neoclassicism and art nouveau, and it looks especially spectacular when lit up in the evening.

Oleg Tabakov's Moscow Theater
It is a cozy theater whose playbill includes classical productions of Russian and foreign playwrights, as well as modern renditions of well-known works. The theater’s repertoire is shaped under the guidance of Vladimir Mashkov, who gained fame for his roles not only on Russian screens and stages, but also in Hollywood. The theater successfully participates in Russian and international festivals and has been awarded prestigious prizes in the performing arts, such as the Golden Mask and the State Prize of the Russian Federation.
