Monument to Gagarin
For the 1980 Olympics, Moscow was decorated with new monuments. Among them was the monument on Gagarin Square, dedicated to the first human space flight. The square itself is located on the famous 14-kilometer Leninsky Prospekt, which has largely preserved its classic historical appearance since the grandiose General Plan for Moscow’s reconstruction in 1935.
From afar you will already see an impressive, almost 43-meter high titanium sculpture mounted on a high pedestal. At the foot, there is a copy of the descent vehicle from the ship “Vostok”, on which Yuri Gagarin made his historic flight on April 12, 1961.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space

Pay attention to the architects' elegant creative solution: the curved structure depicts a plume from a space rocket, which is perched at the very top. The statue is so admired that a copy can be found on the grounds of the European headquarters of the United Nations.
