Diaghilev: Stage Magic Revived

Ballet Meets a Legend: The Diaghilev Story

This summer, the Bolshoi Theatre prepares to unveil a momentous tribute. On June 24th, the New Stage will host the premiere of the two-act ballet Diaghilev in three scenes. This production is a profound homage to Sergei Diaghilev, the visionary impresario who shaped 20th-century art.

Under the direction of Sergei Glazkov, with choreography by Alessandro Kaggedzhi, the ballet unfolds as a captivating "play within a play." It centres on the creative whirlwind surrounding the staging of Diaghilev's legendary, passionate ballet Daphnis et Chloé, intertwining its narrative with the main story. A contemporary work pulsating with neoclassical traditions, the ballet will be invigorated by a live orchestra performing music by Diaghilev's French contemporaries, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.

Leading the stellar cast are Bolshoi principals: Denis Rodkin embodies Diaghilev himself, alongside Eleonora Sevenard as Tamara Karsavina, Semyon Chudin (Michel Fokine), Denis Savin (Léon Bakst), Dmitry Smilevsky (Vaslav Nijinsky), Vyacheslav Lopatin (Maurice Ravel), and Anastasia Meskova (the Gypsy).

The premiere performances on June 24th and 25th highlight the We Need Diaghilev festival.

Where: The State Academic Bolshoi Theatre of Russia (New Stage), 4/2 Bolshaya Dmitrovka Street.
